Amidst the relentless march of globalization and the digital revolution, the contours of economic prosperity are being redrawn, with knowledge emerging as the currency of the future. Against this backdrop, Indonesia finds itself at a critical juncture, navigating the complex terrain of a rapidly evolving global economy.

Having witnessed the gradual decline of its industrial base in recent decades, Indonesia has been grappling with deindustrialization. Reality speaking, the plummeting of manufacturing contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) ratio from 27% in 2004 to 18% in 2022. Also, the slowing down of the investment-to-GDP ratio from 34% in 2013 to 27% in 2022.

Yet, as the specter of deindustrialization looms large, Indonesia must confront the stark realities of an outdated economic model while seizing the opportunities presented by the knowledge-based economy. It is a paradigm where intellectual capital serves as the cornerstone of economic growth and resilience.

Central to this ethos is the notion of “know-how,” the amalgamation of theoretical understanding and practical expertise that empowers individuals and nations to innovate, adapt, and thrive in an ever-evolving landscape. Unlike the traditional model of a technology-driven economy, which relies primarily on the adoption and utilization of existing innovations, a knowledge-based economy transcends these boundaries, championing a culture of continuous learning and creativity.

China’s ascent to today’s lofty position as one of the global economic powers has been nothing short of remarkable. Marked by a concerted effort to transition from a labor-intensive to one characterized by innovation, creativity, and intellectual capital. They heavily invest in productive assets, particularly advanced manufacturing equipment such as machines, vehicles, and appliances.

This investment strategy has catalyzed exponential growth in value-added goods and the accumulation of knowledge-based economic. As a result, China has achieved remarkably low unit economics in advanced manufactured clean technology, including solar panels and electric vehicles batteries. This has led to an industrial boom, propelling China’s productive economy forward.

For Indonesia, the imperative of embracing a knowledge-based economy resonates deeply, particularly in the wake of decades marked by de-industrialization. As the traditional manufacturing sector wanes in prominence, the path to sustainable growth lies not in clinging to outdated models, but in charting a new course. The one that defined by innovation, entrepreneurship, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Indonesia has a good start by implementing a nickel export ban to incentivize local industrial smelters through downstreaming policy. But, a 30-fold increase in the value of Indonesia’s nickel-related exports (since the ban’s implementation) need to be increased through knowledge-based economy.

At the heart of Indonesia’s strategy lies a steadfast commitment to education and human capital development. By expanding access to quality education, from the halls of academia to the corridors of vocational training centers, Indonesia aims to equip its citizens with the skills, knowledge, and mindset that serves as the cornerstone to foster a culture of innovation and creativity. Laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth and prosperity.

Moreover, Indonesia’s embrace of technology as a driver of economic growth has been nothing short of transformative. From the rollout of digital infrastructure to the promotion of digital literacy and entrepreneurship, Indonesia is leveraging the power of technology to democratize access to knowledge. Empower marginalized communities and unleash the creative potential of its people.

Most crucially, Indonesia’s transformation towards a knowledge-based economy is characterized by a spirit of inclusivity and collaboration. By fostering partnership with global stakeholders, welcoming foreign investment, and embracing the exchange of ideas and expertise, Indonesia is transcending the confined of national borders. Positioning itself as a hub of innovation and creativity in the region and beyond.

In the end, Indonesia’s pursuit of a knowledge-based economy epitomizes its resilience and determination. By fostering collaboration, embracing diversity, and nurturing innovation, Indonesia stands poised to emerge as a beacon of progress in the region and beyond.

As the nation charts its course towards a progressive economic growth, the journey towards knowledge remains not just a destination. But a transformative force driving prosperity and advancement for generations to come.
